A small head is not a character flaw

A small head is not a character flaw

For years we got feedback we didn't take seriously at first: your headphones are good, but too big. People with smaller heads tightened the headband all the way down, and the cups still dangled around their jawline.

So we made the VMK15. An on-ear model, about 200 grams, buttons hidden under the fabric surface and the same Jasse tuning as in our bigger models. The price is 139 euros, because we assumed you can't decently ask for more for smaller headphones.

Then Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung's Kaufkompass tested 48 on-ear headphones and picked the VMK15 as the winner of the entire comparison. We didn't design a test winner. We designed headphones for people the others don't fit. The win came as a bonus.

Below you'll find the reasoning, the reviewers' scores and one genuinely weaker point, which we'll tell you about ourselves before someone else beats us to it.

P.S. Light and folding down small, the VMK15 also makes an excellent travel companion: headphones for travel.

Why did this win, and not something bigger and more expensive?

Sound the Germans verified for us

Sound the Germans verified for us

Every manufacturer praises their own sound quality, so our praise weighs nothing. Let's hand this part over to the Germans. F.A.Z. Kaufkompass tested 48 on-ear headphones and named the VMK15 the winner of the entire comparison.

According to reviewer Thomas Johannsen, the VMK15 "sounds excellent, is uncomplicated to use and sits comfortably on the ears even after hours of listening". A German does not say that out of politeness. Kopfbox.de gave it 8.8/10, Basic Tutorials 87/100, and errori.net's Jaakko Nygård summed it up: "It's a forgiving travel companion that makes even a bad recording sound pleasant."

The reason is the tuning. Jasse "Jazmanaut" Kesti also tuned our more expensive models, and the ears were the same. aptX Adaptive and multipoint came along as a bonus, but they didn't win the test. The sound, the easy controls and the comfort did.

The battery outlasts your holiday

One charge, 55 hours of listening. That's two weeks of commutes, an entire book series on audiobook, or one truly terrible week when you don't want to hear anyone.

When you do eventually forget to charge, quick charging covers for you. And if you forget that too, there's a 3.5 mm cable in the box, so the music continues the old-fashioned way, down a wire. Battery anxiety can stay in the same box as the charging case.

Designed for small heads. Fits big ones too.

Designed for small heads. Fits big ones too.

This entire headphone exists because customers with smaller heads complained that the VMK20 and VMK25 were too big. We listened and made a smaller one. It's a matter of head circumference, and that, at least, is something you can build smaller headphones for.

The VMK15 weighs about 200 grams and sits on your ears, not around them. Lighter to carry, less sweating, easier to toss in a bag.

There's still enough adjustment range from hobbit to elephant man. Big heads aren't left out, you just pull the headband a bit further.

Built to last. We'll fix it even after that.

With electronics, it usually goes the same way: the warranty runs out, the device breaks, and your options are the bin or a new one. We repair your headphones even after the warranty's gone. Even if you sat on them drunk, the dog chewed the headband, or your kid decided to find out if they can fly off the balcony.

And then the things tests don't measure

Buttons you don't have to stroke

The VMK15 has physical buttons hidden under the fabric surface. No touch controls that pause your music every time you adjust your beanie. You press a button, something happens. A surprisingly rare feature.

The LED lights are on the inside of the headphones, so you won't blink in a dark bus like a Christmas tree. A fixed fabric finish completes the package, and one of the colour options is officially named depressing long drink grey. We named it ourselves and we are proud of it.

The honest part: for noise cancelling, the big brother is better

Let's say it straight: an over-ear model usually cancels noise better than an on-ear one, because a closed cup seals around your ear. Our best noise cancelling lives in the VMK25.2. If you're buying headphones primarily for the silence, buy that one.

The VMK15's noise cancelling still helps in everyday life. Office hum, bus drone and the open-plan office's mandatory conversations fade to tolerable. In return you get a lighter, nimbler headphone and the cheapest way into the Valco sound, at 139 euros.

The warranty is two years either way. After that we repair the headphones for a flat 69 euros regardless of the fault, battery replacement and postage included. It's a terrible way to sell you new headphones, and we do it anyway.

Shipping is entirely on us!

Nobody likes it when one more mysterious fee appears on top of the price at checkout. That is why we pay the shipping and deliver every product free of charge, anywhere in the world.

In certain developing countries, such as the United States, Norway and the United Kingdom, the local despot may collect taxes, duties or other realm-maintenance fees on your parcel. Sadly there is nothing we can do about those.

In the civilised world, however, the price is exactly what you see on our site. No surprises at checkout and no delivery fee on top of your headphones.

They are also fully greenwashed!

They are also fully greenwashed!

Valco wants to look like one of the good guys and sell a lot of headphones. Since everyone else is doing this nowadays, we decided to launch an environmental campaign of our own. Of course it is greenwashing when a company plants trees. No point dancing around it. Let us be honest.

55-hour battery life

Yes, you read that right. Fifty-five hours out of a small pair of on-ear headphones. Fly to Australia, look at some wombats, fly back, and you still haven't had to plug them in. If you're a normal person who doesn't fly to Australia, that's easily a week. Charge them Sunday and you won't need the charger again until next weekend. Or later, if you forget.

What the media's saying about our noise cancelling headphones

"We tested 48 on-ear headphones. For most people, the best one in our view is the Valco VMK15. It sounds excellent, is uncomplicated to use and sits comfortably on the ears even after hours of listening." Test winner

"On calls, the Valco VMK25.2 impresses with excellent speech intelligibility on both ends. (…) That leaves plenty of energy for a fresh, open reproduction of the mids and highs, which shine with very good resolution."

Mobiili.fi

"In the two-hundred-euro price range, the Valco VMK25.2 headphones are definitely an option worth considering."

io-tech.fi

"With ANC off, the VMK25.2 delivers the best sound quality Valco has offered so far, at least to my taste."

errori.net

"With a 199-euro price tag these are damn fine cans, offering exceptional value for money in the form of massive battery life and insane comfort." Score 8.5/10

Headphonecheck

"Valco is certainly not a bargain-basement price, but it offers a complete package that includes a secure Bluetooth connection, excellent battery life, top-tier ANC functions, and a warm, well-tuned hi-fi sound."

Beyond Pixels

"The music quality is second to none, and audiophiles in particular can go for these without batting an eye." Score 9.4/10

Kuulokenurkka.com

"The Valco VMK20 headphones impress above all with their sound quality. I haven't heard better noise cancelling headphones so far."

"The VMK25 isn't the most feature-packed noise cancelling headphone on the market. But for anyone who values ease of use, durability, and good sound quality, it's a perfect choice."

What the hell is noise cancelling?

In the video below, our audio technician Jasse "Jazmanaut" Kesti breaks it down in plain terms: what noise cancelling actually is.

Note! The video tests the VMK25 headphones, which have slightly weaker noise cancelling than the newest VMK25.2 model.

Questions other people asked too

Does the VMK15 fit a big head too?

It does. The adjustment range covers everything from hobbit to elephant man, so a big head is no obstacle. The design did start from smaller heads though, because that's what people complained to us about.

How does the noise cancelling compare to the VMK25.2?

Honestly: the VMK25.2 cancels better, because an over-ear cup seals around the ear. The VMK15's noise cancelling handles everyday hum, but it doesn't compete with its big brother. If maximum noise cancelling is your top criterion, buy the VMK25.2. We won't be offended.

What comes in the box?

A charging cable, a 3.5 mm AUX cable, an aeroplane adapter and a travel case. In other words, everything you need, plus an aeroplane adapter in case you ever sit on a plane that still requires one.

Does it work with a cable?

It does. A 3.5 mm cable is included, so the music keeps playing even if the battery is empty or your device is so old it has never heard of Bluetooth.

Why would I pick on-ear headphones over earbuds?

A 55-hour battery, physical buttons and a sound that won a 48-headphone comparison. Also, headphones with a headband don't vanish into the sofa or the washing machine. Earbuds are handy, but the fate of small objects is to get lost.
